Her parents were Beverly the housewife and Thad an officer in the US Navy. She is also the mother of three children and one brother. Her father was a diplomat, and family members moved often. They lived in many countries around the globe and included Germany, Japan, Greece, and Germany. After moving to Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and earned a bachelor's in theatre. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988, in order to receive her MFA.
