JoyceDeWitt started performing on stage at 13. When she was 13 years old, Dewitt began to perform on stage. She earned an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. The director encouraged her to pursue UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. There she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she worked as a secretary before making her first appearance on television on an episode of Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was taught by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has declared that the two actors never did meet. The role she played by DeWitt as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 period is among her most famous. She was chosen to play the show's pilot and was eventually offered the role. Janet was also in an episode of The Ropers which she was a part in 1979. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in the series' 1984 finale. She also appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that she ceased acting for a long time. In June of 1991 she returned to acting by playing the role of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. One of her roles was in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired an episode in 1997 that featured an actress who was based on her. The voice was performed in part by another actress. She appeared in an episode Cybill and made a brief appearance in Living Single's final episode. Her work in the 2000s include television shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
